I remember as a student over 20 years ago learning about a ‘leaky gut’, it is only now becoming main line news. The connection between diet and this condition is evident and it is probably affecting your health and arthritis.
Gluten is causing some serious health problems and when you think how people’s diets are full of gluten. Gluten is found in grains like wheat, rye, barley and oats contain gluten, however the king of gluten is wheat.
Gluten contains a protein called gliadin, it passes through the cell lining of the intestinal tract and into the bloodstream! People who suffer from any form of arthritis ie rheumatoid arthritis (RA) often have a ‘leaky gut’. There are many other conditions where a ‘leaky gut’ will be contributing to their health problem.
Gliadin is seem as foreign invader, reeking havoc in the blood stream, reacting with various organs. This gliadin set up a chain of events that ultimately cause inflammation. In the case of arthritis sufferers, it set up problems in the joints and muscles, where constant battles rage, fighting these invaders.
For other people gliadin can cause depression as this substance reacts with their brain cells, for others it could set up asthma, remember we are not all the same, as we all have different weaknesses.
What can bring about damage and a ‘leaky gut’ in the first place –
Anti-biotics – some people have had several doses in their time.
Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) often used to ease pain and inflammation. These are the very medications that could be making your condition worse.
They also say the ‘pill’ contributes to this problem.
Then our typical Western diets also contribute, especially sugar.
Our experience over the years in the clinic with patients, have seem many people who have been in constant pain, improve drastically by removing gluten from their diet completely.
Though gliadin is not the only cause of inflammatory conditions, there are other aspects of your diet you will need to take care of, however eliminating gluten from your diet will be a really huge first step to improving your condition.
